Default Anyone else have a (veggie) garden?

This is my 2nd year with a garden... the first year I tried we had just moved into our home and it was sooo late in the season, I barely got anything... but this year I started early and have tons of plants- many are blooming already!

I have 2 8x8 raised beds and some other small areas in my yard- and was able to fit tons of stuff:

raspberries (2 plants)
blueberries (1 bush)
strawberries (a ton! they're already turning red!)
cantalope (the only thing that isn't thriving well- planted them too early)
watermelon

pumpkins
summer squash
green beans
peas (sugar snap and standard type)
green peppers
tomatoes
red cabbage
brocoli
cauliflour
eggplant
cucumbers
celery
romaine lettuce
sweet corn

basil
chives
italian leaf blend
parsley

I think I'm missing some.... I dunno...

What do you have planted or planned? I hope I'm not the only one! Cuz I need some good tips! But I'm surprised I've got them thriving this well- they're growing like crazy!!!

Oh, no suggestions for pesticides unless natural- I'm all organic!

ME!!

I had a flower garden...growing mostly flowers to attract butterflies but the stupid county workers zapped it with their weedeater. Im pretty mad about that. I actually cried when I saw it

Aside from my flower garden we are growing watermelons, carrots, radishes, tomatoes and we have wild blackberries in the woods behind us.

So since they zapped my flower garden Im gonna plant me some confederate jasmine. Itll spread nicely across the back fence and smells heavenly and Im going to move my flower beds further up in the yard so they dont "confuse" it with grass

One of the things I use alot out of my DH veggie garden (his little project) is Scallions. It's great to be able to go out and pluck one for a recipe! Plus, I think they are pretty easy to grow and can fit in between some other plants. He's done some from starts and from seed.

We have a small space we've planted with tomatoes, bell peppers, strawberries, and herbs. So far so good!

We've always had gardens since I was a little girl...like when I was little that was our main source of food lol...

ours is a joint family effort though lol...we have about 2 acres on my grandfather's land that is planted every year...row after row of veggies lol

field peas
string beans - these have been coming in this week and are soo good
purple hulls
sweet corn
field corn
watermelons
running beans
tomatoes
squash
okra
bunch beans
and a whole bunch of watermelons

I've probably left something out...but my Daddy does most of the planting stuff and then then when it all starts coming in the real work begins...picking/shelling/shucking etc...we juice most of our tomatoes and can them...the corn is the most work...I usually end up practically moving into my mom's house during that week lol b/c we cream it and then bag it in ziplocks

we've had some good rain this year though..so right now everything looks good..my fingers are crossed that our butter beans make b/c we are all totally out of them

when I was growing up I HATED working in the garden...it was an early morning til late afternoon gig and was just not fun for a kid lol..but now I'm so glad my parents taught me how important and special it is to grow your own food...and nothing you will ever buy at a store can compare to fresh vegetables

we had a huge one too as a kid Nikki. My step-dad was a landscaper and worked with plants almost all his life so we had fruit trees all over our yard plus the garden. We had oranges (tons and tons) figs, rhubarb, pomegranites, watermelon, corn, several types of peppers, potatoes (I think), strawberries, carrots, onions. Oh gosh all kinda beans and peas. Love fresh vegies.

We just really started our garden here at our house. Both my husband and I have tried growing pineapples but we have just not had much luck with that. My mom had several growing at her house. They were tiny but REALLY GOOD!! She told me how to get them started but they would just never root.

I did last year, and the rabbits ate everything but the tomatoes.

So this year, just tomatoes.

I had hoped to start a veggie garden this year, but Jordan doesn't want to do anything until after we build our fence. He's totally on board with putting in a few raised beds (our soil is AWFUL so we really have to do raised beds) so I'm excited about that. Idid start a little herb garden in our kitchen window though, and it's coming along really nicely. My cilantro is growing like CRAZY and the basil is coming in really well too. The oregano started out slow but is getting there, and the rosemary is my really slow grower.

I REALLY want to get some tomato plants into pots to grow on the deck (which is also getting built at some point this summer). Eventually I want to grow broccoli, cauliflower, string beans, lettuce, zucchini, peppers, and tons of tomatoes.

A ton of birds have been eyeing my blueberries & strawberries! I gotta get some nets to put around them!!

That's what we did, but then after I wished I had put in the raised beds first...
Our landscaper delivered the dirt in our front lawn and we had to wheelbarrow it into the beds because the fence was in the way- not fun!!!!
I really wish I had the beds built first so he could've dumped the soil into them!!! lol!!

Oh I hear ya. I'm not saying it's the smart way to do it, LOLOL! My husband is an extremely stubborn man. So when the dirt gets dumped in the front of the house because we can't get into the backyard, HE will be the one wheelbarrowing it back.

We're also building the fence BEFORE the deck. Same logic. But also not my problem. This is one of those battles that I'm not picking

FUN!! I really want a garden... and if we get our house, I'm definitely going to be planting some stuff! I really want to grow bell peppers (cuz I die a little inside paying $1.50 for one at the grocery store), jalapenos, lettuce, herbs, orange tree, lemon tree, and maybe even see if my dad will teach me how to grow kiwi if they'll grow here. He grew kiwi in our yard in California and it was soooo amazing. Yummm!

We are renting right now however I'm going to try to grow some herbs using pots. I think we are going to start with basil, which I love. I wish I could have a real garden; I absolutely hate paying such huge prices on fruit and veggies and then the food spoils soon after you bring it home. I would love to have my own and have it fresh.

We have one 4x8 raised bed (using the Square Foot Gardening Method). One thing we had to do where we live is line the bottom of the bed (it has boards around it to make it raised) with hardware cloth so the underground critters didn't burrow up into the bed and make a big mess (and start munching)!

Uh-oh, I hope I don't have to worry about that here! (Vermont) I didn't even think about the animals that burrow!
But I have the bottom of my garden lined with landscaping fabric (to prevent the weeds from coming up) so hopefully they can't sense my veggies through it!!!!!!!!!!!

I planted a few things this year. Tomatoes, green beans and cucumbers. I would love to plant more but I don't know where in my backyard would be best. The best place would be along the side but our neighbors have a pear tree that ends up dropping rotting pears down in out yard in the fall. The rest of our yard is pretty shaded so I'm not sure if it is the best for growing things.

Uhm...ok...WOW!

I have a big garden. Do you want to come over and do mine, too? I grew up having this big garden and - long story - am now kinda responsible for it. I like it, but with working full time and doing it more or less alone I get less done than I'd liked. Thank God I have a lot of stuff that is permanent.
But I have grown a bit this year, still waiting in pots to get into the beds. Mini sunflowers and..hmm...no idea how they are called in English, translation would be midday-flower. It open in the sunshine and closes in the evening. Very cute.

On the yummy side I have red currants and gooseberries and chestnuts in fall.

We did our first garden this year! We have green beans, black beans, lima beans, purple hull cowpeas, carrots, broccoli, cucumbers, rosemary, cilantro & oregano! Everything has broken through the ground except for the rosemary! It's SO exciting! lol

I really enjoy working a garden..It's so rewarding!! I find my kids will come more to eating something they help grow vs. cooking frozen veggies from the store. Let's see, I planted tomatoes, egg plant, bell peppers, hot peppers, onions, zucchini, butter peas, purple hull peas, squash, sweet corn, cantaloupe, and sunflowers.

We started ours last year. We grew cucumbers like CRAZY, and I don't like them... nothing else did very well. This year, nothing has grown. We think birds are getting to them as soon as they sprout so they don't last. I'm so sad!

Sarah my mom had these container gardens that were totally self contained. I wish I could remember how she had them set up. Kept all the pests out and they grew really well in them.
