Skip pictures and use painters tape, or graph paper. Measure your room and the size of the pieces you want in it, and then cut up pieces of graph paper to size. Then you can move them around the room on paper til you get a configuration you think will work.

I don't really count that as math, lol. Measure room. 1 block = 1 foot (or 6"). Then it's just counting blocks. You don't have to be EXACT, just approximate.

It's just hard to get a sense of size/depth and placement from photographs alone. When we moved into our house we thought it would be awesome to put the big screen tv on the tall wall in the living room, with a couch opposite, and then a couch along the hallway opening. So that's what we did. Except that the room is way too small, and sitting on the couch alongside the tv gave you a headache because you felt like you were INSIDE the show, lol.

Or use the painters tape to tape the outline of the furniture on the floor to get a sense of flow. But that works better with an accent like a rug, instead of a whole room I think. Especially if you already have all the furniture in there to have to work around.

What Col said. Or if you don't have graph paper lying about, just starting grabbing furniture and moving it. It's much easier to do this if you're not moving, say, a piano. Those little furniture sliders help a ton. Bonus: you'll get to vacuum underneath all that furniture, even if you do decide to just move it back where it was. Some nice spring cleaning for you!

What is this graph paper you speak of?

Use Photoshop. You can create a scale model using shape tools and the grid. No math needed and no little bits of paper to keep track of.

I have a scale model of our house in microstation (a CAD program I use at work) LOL!

I would have a harder time doing it in PS than using graph paper. But I don't use shapes that much, lol.

Go use Arrange-a-Room on the BHG website. I've used that for EVERY room that I've had to rearrange. So awesome and easy!
