Default who here have husbands that have to work during Christmas?

I know I shouldn't complain but my husband has to work nights christmas eve and christmas day.. this is the first time I can remember in awhile he's had to work during the holidays and it makes me sad I"m glad he'll at least be home/awake for some of christmas morning but I'm thinking that christmas eve the kids and i will have a slumber party so that I can try and find away to get them to stay in their room away from seeing presents under the tree until darcy gets home

He leaves for work at 5pm and gets home the next morning at 8am. He has long days/nights

Hugs for those of you who have their husbands working or if they are away or deployed

Awww that's a bummer, Kristin! I'm not going through that this year, but I remember once in the past my ex had to work at like noon on Christmas Day. It was nice to get up and have Christmas with the kids, but it felt so rushed and awkward when he had to leave for work.

*HUGS*

ME! And he volunteered to do it b/c we were SUPPOSED to be going to Disney the week after Christmas. (but aren't anymore.)

Joel works 2-10 both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Plus he's working today, too. Boo.

Not this year but that has been our holidays for many of our previous years. My hubby always closes his karate school during the holidays but there is always a need for police duties during that time. SO, duty calls at times. It has gotten better in the last couple of years but I remember the years of not having him here. It sucks. Sorry Kristin!

I'm sorry Kristin. My husband's a paramedic and he works a lot of holidays. I think he's worked every holiday this year aside from this Christmas (Whoo Hoo!). We really appreciate it when he gets to be home. We're pretty good about making the best of it and celebrating when we can but it's still a bummer.

Not this year but its happened in the past. The one that really sucked was when DH deployed on the 15th of December (3 days after Troy's birth). That one was really hard for me.

Yep, I'm another one whose hubby usually has to work the holidays. He worked Thanksgiving and now will work Christmas Eve. At least he has Christmas Day off. He is a respiratory therapist -- somebody has to help take care of the sick people on the holidays too! Kind of bummed, but we are used to it. He works pretty much every other holiday. And growing up, my Mom was the same way -- she is an RN and always worked at least every other holiday too.

This year no, but he will have to work New Year's. He worked Christmas a couple of years ago, got called out, and didn't get home until 5 am...it was really hard because I had to assemble a play kitchen! Luckily my dad was there that year!

They take turns, so he'll probably work Christmas next year. We are used to him not being here for most things, so we work around it the best we can.

The mine darcy works at got new owners/management a few years ago. The previous owners would shut down for christmas.. and everyone would be off but the new owners like $ more I think.. lol!

Darcy will be working new years also.

Sorry for all those who have husbands working or have to work themselves- amy that sucks!

They did a thing here where people on different shifts could volunteer if they wanted to work since it will be OT rate etc and some guys don't have family etc but darcy said there wasa mess up or something on that..

{{hugs}} I know what that is like... my Dad worked almost every Christmas and major holidays... he hauls milk. We got use to him not being around for these things...

This year DH kind of has to work... with Christmas and New Years landing on Sunday, my hubby has radio to do... but I think he was going to voice track Christmas Day - one would think that there would be a radio special on that would be automated, but doesn't sound like that will be this year...

They are really short on part timers at the radio station - so he can't get out of it... so if you know anyone within driving distance of Green Bay WI that would like to do radio... let me know.

Maybe. We've volunteered to take duty shifts on Christmas and new years for anyone who has small kids.

It must be horrible for you who have loved ones who can't be with you due to work etc. This year my brother is doing a 7 - 7 shift at the ambulance station so we'll be having our Christmas feast at night when he comes back home. He did volunteer for the shift so that the people who have young children can be at home through the day and at least his girlfriend works on the same team so they get to spend the day together even though they have to work.

Rocky is off on Christmas, but being in restaurant management, the only holidays they are closed is July 4th and Christmas Day. He works EVERY other holiday during the year so I feel ya - it sucks.

my mother works one or the other every year. last year she worked christmas day (11pm-7am), this year she works christmas eve (11pm-7am). it sucks when she works christmas eve cause she has to sleep all afternoon and we always feel guilty keeping her awake in the morning for pancakes/presents.

No husband, but I work both Christmas Eve & Christmas Day. Luckily, my son's dad is actually going to be in town those days so he will be with him and I can see him after work.

We got really lucky this year, my husband actually doesn't work for Christmas. He's usually on duty for Christmas or Thanksgiving. I'm so thankful he'll be home since our kids really are into Christmas right now. I'm sorry for all those that have to work and miss it.

Mine is on call Christmas Eve & Christmas Day, all day, actually for 72 hours straight - Sat through Mon. They try to rotate Christmas on call but they laid off two of the three people he rotates with and the remaining person had already requested vacation time when they laid off the other two. Making this the 3rd year in a ROW.

I almost wish he had a shift so we'd at least know he'd be gone from this time to this time and could plan around it. As it is we are never quite sure if/when he might have to work, if that work is something that can be done from home over the network, or something that has to be done in the office with the special software/hardware or something that will require him to drive 2-5 hours away and climb a tower to replace broken or damaged equipment.

Or maybe nothing at all happens & we get the OT as a nice Christmas bonus, though that has yet to ever happen.

Ah, I remember those days well. My dad was a police officer, then chief of police (and in between he worked for the highway department, clearing the highways during snow storms). My mom was a nurse and an EMT. We usually had one parent at home on the holidays....

I can remember eating holiday meals at the hospital. Or my dad being gone for big chunks of the day.

My husband doesn't get paid holidays, he has to work ahead in order to get the days off. So he's in the middle of a 11 day stretch with only one day off (today). He gets slightly (a lot) cranky. I'm almost not sure it's worth it. He works Saturdays so he had to work way ahead to get the entire holiday weekend, plus Monday off.

Jeff was gone 2 yrs ago on Christmas when it snowed. It's looking like we'll get snow Friday or Christmas Eve this year.. which is fine.

My dad works at the hospital, so he has to work every 3rd year on Christmas Day.

DH used to be a long haul driver, and we would be on the highway for Christmas. Then we had kids & he worked local, so had Christmas off. Now he works for the dept of trans, being low man in rank, he's not only gets to work graveyard shift (unless it's snowing, then it's 7am-7pm) but he 'gets' to work the holidays too. This is our 2nd year of him working on Christmas eve/day. He's also worked, Thanksgiving/New Years, both years.

He'll get home at 7am Christmas morning, but hopefully the kids will be having a slumber party in my room, so we can avoid 'Santa's visit" until after that... then goes back in that night at 11, if it's not snowing/raining/ice, etc, in which case he'd go in at 7pm.
