My kitty died yesterday

And we have no idea why. She was only about 7 years old and acting perfectly normal. My son & one of the dogs heard a whimpering sound coming from his room and by the time dh & I got in there she was gone. Just laying there on the floor. I was absolutely hysterical. The kids and I bawled out eyes out forever. It's such a shock to me and I don't understand why it happened.

Thanks, girls. I'm feeling a little better, but I keep expecting to see her poke her head between the stair railings, and then I remember what happened, and I get a big lump in my throat. I lost a couple of cats when I was a kid, but it's even harder as an adult for some reason. Maybe because I've been the one taking care of her all these years. We rescued her from animal control about 6 years ago. I'm glad she got 6 extra, nice years to live than what surely awaited her. KWIM?

My dd's been sitting her in bed petting one of the dogs all afternoon. I'm worried. Do you think she's just processing everything?

Cats are very good in hiding their symptoms. She might have been sick without you noticing. One of my cats was absolutely fine (so we thought) when I just by accident walked through the laundry when he tried to do his business ( I mean.. seriously, you really wouldn't see that or specifically watch for it, right?). Well, I noticed that he had some trouble and took him to the vet. He said, oh yeah, constipation, some tom cats get that, no problem, you can pick him up again this afternoon. A few hours later I got a call... our sweet Gizmo was already so weakened that he didn't survive the procedure
