Default NSBR: did you have an engagement announcement in the newspaper?

apparently, his mother asked if he wanted one in the paper out where he grew up. and i asked my mom if she was going to put one in our paper. so i told him to tell his mom that she could do it if she wanted, but my mom wasn't doing one here. so i think his mom has decided against doing it there. i dunno.

i can see the point of a wedding announcement, which i want after we do get married. i know i want that. but if we have a wedding announcement, do we really need an engagement announcement now?

anyway. did you have an engagement announcement in the newspaper? is it standard to do both? is my etiquette knowledge just.. off?

We didn't do an engagement announcement OR a wedding announcement. We were engaged for almost 2 years before we were married so it would have been kind of silly to do an engagement announcement for such a long engagement, I think. However, it is pretty standard here for people to do both. Parents like to brag on their kids. Dh and I did everything ourselves when we got married so to do an announcement would have felt like tooting our own horns and that isn't my style.

Yes..in our local small town weekly paper and in the Jackson Metro paper which is where I was living at the time. It's pretty traditional around here to do engagement announcements and then wedding announcements. Birth announcements too

Oh and I think DH's mother put one in their local weekly paper as well.

We did - but only in my home town paper . I don't even know if the Sacramento Bee has an announcement section (where dh was born & where his parents live)

My MIL put one in their big paper because she was excited and it was the 'thing' to do.

*I* didn't do it locally because I'm cheap LOL

We definitely didn't put it in the Seattle paper, but I can't recall if my mom put it in her local paper (where I went to high school). If I had to choose, I'd rather have a wedding announcement.

We don't live in a small town and we're not socialites among the wealthy Palm Beach upper class. Putting an announcement in the paper would have been like shouting it out in a busy mall where everyone stares at you in an odd way because they don't know who you are... and don't care. LOL! I guess it depends on where you're from and where you live. If we still lived in the small town where I was born an announcement would have been expected since, socially, it's a norm there. As for this big city, it was overkill. Everyone who needed to know knew because I sent out save-the-date's and wedding invitations to them.

I guess technically, ours was an engagement announcement. But, our small local paper here prints them the same week you get married, so they kind of double as wedding announcements. We did one, and I love having that newspaper clipping in our scrapbook.

Yes, our parents put it in our local paper (which is free if you use a B&W photo). We grew up in the same town so only 1 paper was needed. They also put our wedding announcement in . Very much the tradition in our hometown.

Yes, a pic of me with the announcement. It was traditional then (22 years ago) to do one and only with the bride's pic, but I don't think it's done much anymore.

And then we did a wedding announcement with a pic from our wedding.

We did both. I think they're fun, and when I'm home, I love to read the local paper to see who's engaged.

I think that your first/last ame and your husband's first/last name are listed automatically under weddings. But it just your names. Nothing else. But we didnnt do an engagement announcement or a wedding announcement. We got married by a notary and it was not even really a ceremony.

This is us exactly. Ours was free, too. Our paper comes out once a week and is mostly full of things like announcments. We don't have much news. lol.

It's not common for newspapers in California to do this. So no. LOL

No... but only because at the time I was not on speaking terms with my Dad and that side of the family... so I didn't want him to know we were getting married.

Our marriage licence was published 2 weeks out... but that is something they just do, we didn't ask to have it done...

We did not do an engagement announcement or a wedding announcement. It is done some here, but not a lot. There might be 1-2 each week in the local papers.

thanks for all the responses!

i think it's funny how in different parts of the country, things vary. here? every week, there's a big column in the paper with engagements, weddings, and big anniversaries (35+ years). so that's where ours would be. i always check to see, but i also don't know how i feel about my name and photo being in the paper. that's what's stopping me.

thanks for the responses and advice, though (:

My mom put one in my hometown newspaper a few months before we were married. We were engaged for about a year and a half at that point. LOL We did a wedding announcement in the same newspaper as well.
