Default Achilles Tendon question

So I have been having trouble with my right heel for about 18 months now and went to the doctor today thinking I had a bone spur or something but it turns out my Achilles tendon is seperating from where it attaches to the bone. Now they are talking surgery but I am not up for that. They gave me an anti inflammatory for the swelling, some pt exercises and a list of things I should not do and a few weeks to see if it will improve. Anyone ever had issues with theirs? If so what did you do and did it work?

I don't have any advice Lorie, but that sounds painful. My BIL completely tore his and it was a very long recovery. Lots of P&PT for you!

Thank you for the P and PTs Sherri. This is why I hate going to the doctor. she also scheduled my thyroid work up next month which I despise. Being told yet again that there is no new treatment option for me is so dang depressing. Only good thing is she gave me real props for my weight loss. Still it was a long afternoon. Lol

Oh, Lorie! I'm so sorry about your heel. Man, that has got to be so painful and difficult to hear that the recovery is slow. I hope it heals faster than expected so you don't need surgery!!

Oh, wow, that sounds painful!!! I don't know anything about it, but I'll be sending p & pt!!! I hope it will improve on it's own and you don't have to have surgery. On the other hand, way to go on your weight loss!!! -I know that's a rough road by itself.

Thanks Girls! Pardon me for saying so but it is hell getting old. And I shrunk another quarter inch. I am barely 5'8 now and at one time I was 5'9. I'm telling you, a chunky chick cannot afford to get shorter! At this rate by the time I'm 60 I will be a round ball!

I am 5'2.5" and not thin by any means. I wear a size 12 jeans. If anyone is going to be a round ball it's me! P.S. Notice I added that half inch to my height???

Oh no, those are really painful so hopefully yours won't require surgery! My DH tore his Achilles about 95% in Jan. 2002 (when our oldest was exactly one month old) and it was a very long recovery. He tore his playing basketball, but his ortho said it was more than likely due to his job at the time delivering furniture/TV's and jumping out of the back of the delivery truck in unsupportive shoes. He had to have surgery and was off work for almost 6 months with casts and P/T. His bothers him every now and then, especially when he plays sports so he tends to be very careful on it cause he definitely doesn't want to do surgery again!

Oh no Lorie - that does not sound good. I hope you can get it to improve without surgery.

It does have me wondering though. Where is your pain exactly? Two years ago I had a ton of pain on my right heel and I diagnosed myself (ha) with plantar fasciitis. After a year of wearing really supportive shoes, it went away. Now, after our trip to Disneyland, it's back. I'll have to see if it gets better, but you definitely have me wondering if I diagnosed myself right, or not.

Keep us posted!

Mary, it is right in the back of my heal towards the right side. It is very tender to the touch and swollen in that area and the pain is a burning sensation along with a throbbing. It always hurts in that one spot, but as the day goes on and I use my foot, especially when I drive, the pain moves outward and up my leg; mostly because I favor it and my calf muscles are strained from it, I think. Because it is localized at that particular spot, they pretty much knew from the get go what it was. I however was completely and unpleasantly surprised.

Yikes - that sounds so painful Lorie! Sorry you are dealing with it. Again, I hope you can get it to improve without surgery.

My husband is having issues with his. They put him on anti-inflammatory's, they gave him these things for his shoes and a brace for at night. He also has to do a routine to stretch it at night. He actually has a follow up today, he says its amazing how much better its been feeling.
