Default Any of you gals do martial arts?

My son's martial art studio does lots of family classes. There are lots of dad's & kids or mom's & kids that take classes together. I've been thinking about trying it out. Looks like an awesome work-out! Plus I would get to learn how to break a board with my palm and throw a big burly guy over my shoulder!

Just curious to see if there are any other practitioners out there!

My husband and boys do, but I cannot, yet. My knee can't handle the basics of running and kicking, yet, so I have to get it worked on and healed before I can join, but I'd certainly love to!!!!

Tara may be a long soon

I signed up once...

yeah...so...

I have a really, really, really challenging time with all the tradition and "respect" that you have to give to people just because of their belt color.

And the outfits were sooooooooooo not flattering...big, baggy white yards of fabric cinched up with a thick knotted belt on a short, short-waisted person is a pretty quick way to make her feel like a cow and be completely self-conscious.

I did until we had to cut some things out of the budget a few months ago. I miss it. I started with my son only because after the first two classes I saw other adults in there and figured rather than sit for an hour I could do it too and wt some exercise. Like anything else, there was a lot to learn at first but it was great. There's something very empowering about breaking boards and being able to throw a large man off of you after you're already on the ground and he has you straddled. We studied Tang Soo Do (Korean martial art similar to Tae Kwon Do but we don't use any weapons until we reach senior rank). I got stronger, more confident, flexible and other little things that hadn't occured to me like improved balance. We are 4 belts away from Black belt and hope to get back to it as soon as we can get it back into the budget. I don't even need to tell you how much my son loved it too.

Darcy it is like you KNOW me or something. LOL Yes, I do martial arts. Yes, I love it. Yes, it makes me feel bada$$. My hubby and I own a martial arts school. We are not traditional like what Krystal is talking about. Yes, there is learning respect and self discipline but not bow down to me because I am a black belt kind of thing. We are more of a "modern" martial arts school.

My only rule is I don't let my hubby teach me. There is no way that I can be THAT submissive and not pop off with my mouth if he corrects me. It is just better for my marriage that one of our hired instructors teaches me.

I don't do it as much as I would like especially after Weston joined us in our home. I do love that I know self defense though. Makes me feel more capable of taking care of myself if needed.

My son has but I have not. He did Tae Kwon Do in SK. They had adult classes but I just couldn't imagine it. Maybe if it was a combo kid and parent class I would consider it more.

The hubs does jeet kun do (Bruce Lee's art) as well as arnis. He used to do aikido. As a result I'm often his training dummy and have learned quite a bit through osmosis, lol.

This is exactly what I've been feeling! The form I'm looking at is "Kuk Sool Won" which is a Korean form. It's a comprehensive martial arts with almost everything: forms, self defense, sparing, weapons, etc... I've always been the kind of person who hides in the background. The confidence & strength I would love to develop!

Awesome Tara! One of the things that intrigued me about my son's school is there are lots of women doing it! And they aren't the typical 'athletic' kind of women' with perfect bodies. They are real people with real shapes! Oh...and I definately don't think I could have my hubby teach me that kind of thing!!
