How long did it take for you to find/buy a house that suited you needs/wants?
(not for me, for a friend that's house seeking) Thanks! ![]() |

first time (10 yr ago) - took us one month... this time, we have been looking for over a year... and no great luck, so we are going to stay put.
Disclaimer - we have a particular neighborhood we want to stay in and 90% of those houses are not in our price range.

Just this past spring I actually lucked out and found a place in less than a month that was perfect for us in just about every way.

We found one very quickly, about a month. We also though had a limited budget so there wasn't a lot to choose from, and we aren't very picky - we didn't have a long list of must haves.

We still haven't found the perfect house. This is the 3rd we've owned though. Each has been bought on a whim. We have started looking again and can't find anything that suits us. Our needs have changed a lot and we are super picky now, so we'll be here until the perfect one comes along whether that be a month from now or 10 years from now.

Our first house took probably 1-2 months. We're in our second house now and we weren't really seriously house hunting when we came upon it - it was kind of a happy accident!

Yeah, it really depends on the market and what you're looking for. It took us about a year the last time we purchased a house (mid-2012). We looked at a lot of houses. I didn't want to drive our realtor nuts, so I would hit up 5 open houses per weekend sometimes. Inventory was very low in our market (and it is just now starting to rebound). Also, there is a lot of old construction in Seattle, so finding adequate square footage was difficult. We were outbid on one house (15 other offers) and on another we pulled out after we weren't happy with the inspection by a structural engineer. So third time was a charm.
A lot of it has to do how specific your criteria are. We weren't in a hurry to purchase, so I was waiting for just the right house. If we were relocating or in a time crunch, we definitely could have move quicker, I expect.

My experience was similar to Sheri's... we had a small general area we were looking at to reduce my husband's commute to work. I had a lot of specific wants on our list (large yard, no HOA, updated interior) and in our price range and neighborhoods we wanted, competition was stiff. We lost 4 houses that we made offers on to cash buyers! So, you never know. Our last house took us 1 month to find.

we found our house (the "one") when we weren't even shopping for a house - however it was a shortsale and we waited 9 months to get it...
