Default Wanna see my house?

We just listed our old house for sale. It was our first home and we lived there for 10 years and have rented it out for the last 4. We sunk $30,000 into that thing (it was a fixer-upper) and made it A.D.O.R.A.B.L.E.

Unfortunately, our renters (who are family no less) have destroyed it and it's taken us months to get into a decent selling shape.

John's calling the realtor to point out that a bunch of photos are upside down, but here's our little baby

http://www.berkshirehathawayhs.com/H...8161-171247902

I hope it sells soon! PSA: Don't rent property to family. Ever.

And I did not paint the kitchen blue or the pink and green bedrooms. BLECH! Who paints their KITCHEN baby blue??? It looks like a school bathroom.

Very nice! It sinks that your family trashed it, but it looks all ready to sell now. I'm jealous of your prices, too-here a 2 bedroom condo would be at least 2x that much.

Super cute, Val! I love the doorways and floors! So sorry to hear your family trashed it - my brother has experienced that with renters, though they weren't family. (I was a FABULOUS tenant when I rented from him. lol!)

It's so weird because we would go over and visit and it never looked too horrible, but I'd be trying really hard to not look like I was examining everything, you know? But after they moved everything out and we went through it... I got MAD. All our hard work

It's darling! We are thinking about renting out our "baby" too. We have been here 10 years. I have had 4 babies in it, and we are busting at the seams! It's about time to upgrade, but I am nervous about renting it out. I think selling might be better...

We couldn't sell at the time because we were upside down and the market here was BAD. But we had just adopted Jake and with the 3 kids and 4 pets we were going crazy. That's the ONLY reason we rented it. I know some people love rental property, but it was a stressful pain in the butt for us.

Good luck selling it! It is so adorable, seriously I love it. We just sold our very first house like 2 weeks ago, we haven't lived in it for almost 6 years. My husband loves having a rental property...I don't really love it but it worked (we only sold because our renters moved out and our property manager was medically unable to keep being our property manager and we are across the country, we didn't want to find a new property manager and renters). We had 1 set of renters who took good care of it, 1 set who trashed it almost and skipped out on the last two months of rent, and this last guy we thought was great - no real issues while he was there but he didn't really take care of it the way we would have and let things slide that I wish he would have said things about so we could have taken care of earlier. It was definitely more emotional than I thought - because I thought after almost 6 years I wasn't attached at all.

The goal when we move again is to keep this house as a rental too...we shall see though.

That is such a gorgeous house Valerie, you have done an incredible job with it!

I'm so sorry your renters did that, especially considering it was family. My husband had over $10k stolen from him when he was working for his extended family a decade ago, and it's a horrible feeling when you are notified of what they have done - it's one thing when it's randoms, but it breaks your heart when it's family.

That's what I'm concerned about too (the stress) when we eventually move and buy on the mainland (we currently live on an island). I'm not keen on selling this place as it's been in my family for 30 years, but that's half the reason I could never rent it to someone else. I'd hate to know if it's being misused. At least if we sold it, it'd be out of sight and out of mind and we wouldn't have to deal with all of the stress that comes with a rental property.

The other thing is that it's been vacant for several months now, so guess who's paying two mortgages right now?

I can sympathize on the two mortgages! Our former home has been on the market for almost three years now. We are in a tiny town and not much has sold at all since we put it up. We have rented it out somewhat but I would sure rather it sold. I have spent the last 4 days painting and patching walls, just wish it would sell and I didn't have to deal with it anymore. Sure hope yours sells quickly for you!
