Ok I had posted this in Mandy's thread (the sealer) and I think it is getting overlooked so I will post it again here. Anyhoo, I just bought my first chipboard albums. I have never done ANY of these but I am really excited about it. So ANY tips anyone has would be awesome. I got the cardbox album and the jack album to start. Anything in particular I should get supply wise, tips for putting it together, etc. Thanks!!
 
I like to print on Satin paper. It doesn't smudge like glossy and isn't flat like matte, it's right inbetween.

I cut my prints using VERY sharp scissors (cutterbee). I don't turn my hand, but rather my paper when I'm cutting.

After I adhere my pages, I go over the edges with a fine sandpaper. I then ink the entire edge with a black permanent ink pad and makeup sponge.

That's all I can think of now.
 
honestly - my best advice is really think about how you want it to look before you start cutting - then take your time! I think with digi we get so used to just being able to hit undo that we speed along.
 
These are my supplies of choice-

Canon Photo Matte Paper 8.5x11"
nail files (cheaper and just as effective as the fancy "scrapbook" files)
scissors (I have small Cutterbee scissors, but I tend to use just regular sharp scissors)
Xyron Cheetah 4" adhesive (so effective! I do it on the chipboard and attach the paper to that)

and I have Pop Dots to attach real embellies with too. :)
 
I just ordered my first album too, and it should be here next week, so I'm half excited half scared to start! Keep them coming, girls, a newbie like me loves some good tips! LOL
 
If you don't want to print at home, I have been taking mine to Office Depot and having them printed on regular cardstock. Their printers really do a great job with the color. You can actually feel the raised ink on the cardstock and they are pretty inexpensive to have done (like 50 cents a sheet).

I agree - you need SHARP scissors. I went to the dollar store and stocked up on nail files, but I also got some sanapaper that I can form to get into some curves.

You need a hole punch as well - all the albums have to have holes punched or cut.

I started using my Xyron - but I also found a liguid glue by 3M that I really like. I always apply the adhesive to the chipboard, the paper curls any other way.

Prima flowers, ribbon, buttons and gems are my favorite embellishments to use.
 
you all are awesome! I am with Chloe and Becca. I have never done one but I have already gotten the chipboard. Just need to print and then jump right in! Keep the ideas coming. Maybe I will feel a little more confident.:)
 
a bone folder and a rubber roller are good things to have to smooth out the bubbles when adhering the paper to the chipboard.

Be careful with liquid adhesive - it can smear or discolor your print.
 
Be careful when you have one side adhered and then you put it down to glue the other side, don't set it on glue! I did the a lot because the Cheetah was wider than the chipboard amd was getting on the workmat.

Now I use a magazine and everytime I use the glue runner, I flip to a clean page! I also do my edges with an exacto knife first and then sandpaper. I do the exacto knife on the magazine as well, and like it so much better than typical work mats because the knife doesn't get stuck or stagger.
 
If you are using Mod Podge, make sure you give it plenty of time to "cure." I usually wait over night before attempting to work on the reverse side.
 
I was brave: I used Modge Podge and I didnt wait for it to "cure". I did all thre fronts and then went and did the backs, lol. It turned out okay; i only had a problem with one page wanting to curve a tiny bit, but its okay!

Samara - what adhesive do you use to adhere your pages?

I hate that about mod podge - how it sometimes warps. and I'm very careful about not applying too much. I have a 3M scrapbookers glue with 2 way applicator (one is like a bingo dauberand the other is like a pen tip. Works GREAT!
 
My very favorite adhesive to use with chipboard is Tombow's Liquid Glue.

I use Cat's Eye Ink by Clearsnap and Ranger Distress Inks all the time. The only time I ever use a permanent ink like StazOn is if I'm doing acrylic albums.

Cutterbee or some other fine and sharp scissors and a Crop-o-Dile are a must.

Glue dots or Glue lines hold ribbon and most embellies down best but don't use them on paper flowers (use the liquid glue on these) as they tend to pull them apart!

If you are using a spray adhesive or any type of spray sealer remember where you are spraying and that there is always overspray so take care if you don't want a sticky floor/rug! I tend to spray outside or in my basement and also inside a deep box when I am in the basement since hubby doesn't like even the concrete floors to be sticky! :)

great thread...i'm going to have to raid my mom's supplies (she paper scraps) to see if she has any of this stuff...it's alll foreign to me...
 
Ok, I just ordered my first chipboard albums, what do you use the nail file for? To smooth the photo out?:blink: :unsure:
 
Vanessa it just cleans the edges some..like i have a bad cutting skills so I sand my edges to clean up my errors lol

I'm going to look for that finger knife that robin posted earlier..hoping my Michael's has it
 
If you're too cheap to buy the Xyron Cheetah, you can find sheets (8.5x11 sheets) of the exact same "glue" at M's...I think you get like 6 sheets or something for $2-3. SUPER cheap. You just lay your chipboard piece on the paper with the glue on it, press down and then peel it off...voila. :)

I didn't know what the Cheetah was until someone told me a couple weeks ago...I've been using that same type of adhesive for years but just not by Xyron, lol. I've got the Hermie dots, and K&Co also makes small 4x8-ish sheets of it too. But my VERY first adhesive I ever bought was the big sheets, lol. They weren't ideal for paper layouts, but would be for chipboard. :)
 
So with the Modge Podge, you use it to glue the page down...right? then you use it for a thin top coat to seal it???

Yup, you can do both things with Modge Podge if you want to. :) Just make sure it's REALLY dry before you put a top coat on.
