Question for hybrid project-making ladies

I'm referring to those usable projects like caddies and little storage boxes like the ones from Lauren Meader's My Timeless Templates and the awesome stuff by Heather Roselli...

Do you think cardstock is sturdy enough for the project? I'm planning to make a storage caddy for my friend similar to this from Creative Imaginations. I don't want to buy the caddy itself; I prefer to do the whole thing myself, but I'm afraid that cardstock might not be strong enough for something like this.

If you use other material to create the base for your hybrid project, what is it and what do you use to score it where folds would be and such?

TIA for your advice! :)

Hi Jill. For something like that caddy I would probably use sheets of chipboard cut and joined with paper tape then either painted and covered in paper or just covered. For the stuff that Lauren Meader makes and Heathers hybrid templates in the SSD store cardstock works fine :)

I meant to add too that you might get a cheaper version of that caddy in a cheap gifty type shop made from wood or chipboard that you could paint and cover

I think for something like that, I would be hesitant to use cardboard. If you put a few pairs of scissors, pencils, etc. it might be too heavy, ya know?

Not sure how much you're wanting to spend, but what about buying an unfinished wooden one at somewhere like Michaels or AC Moore?

Hi ladies, thanks for the great suggestions! I'm gonna try to look for a wooden set instead at the local $2 store and reserve those gifts for Christmas (neat-O idea that I really never thought of before duhhh lol!)

I'm still very into the stuff that Lauren and Heather make, so I should still probably stock up on cardstock as well. They make for really awesome impromptu gifts and I only take about 2-3 hours making each project. :)

Check the local craft store in the section where they have the unfinished wood stuff - they usually have stuff like that too for a reasonable price (and you can use a coupon).
